Army extends unit in Afghanistan

Army News Service

The Army announced Jan. 25 the extension of the 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, currently deployed to Afghanistan. The extension of up to 120-days affects approximately 3,200 deployed Soldiers and their families. These Soldiers will maintain the tactical momentum on the ground to deny the Taliban a base of operations.

“The Army is very proud of the Soldiers of the 3rd Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, and will ensure they and their families have all the support and resources they need during this challenging time,” said Gen. Richard Cody, vice chief of staff of the Army.

The extension comes as a result of a request from commanders on the ground in Afghanistan. The brigade is a key component of the NATO force promoting regional security and stability.

Using the Army’s proven Family Readiness Group organizations, unit and installation commanders and their staffs will ensure families are fully supported by the installation and surrounding communities while their Soldier is away. In fact, 10th Mountain Division leadership informed the affected families during a meeting Jan. 24 of their Family Readiness Groups.
