Belvoir Briefs

River Village, Dogue Creek share town hall meetings

River Village and Dogue Creek residential town halls will be held together on April 17 at the George Washington Village Neighborhood Center.
Installation Commander Col. Brian W. Lauritzen hosts the meeting, which provides residents with updates on issues affecting the village and installation, as well as information from the Residential Communities Liaison Office, and other community-support agencies.
All servicemembers and family members who live in River Village and Dogue Creek are invited.

DFAC closed to some
Meals at Fort Belvoir’s dining facility, the Eagles’ Nest, are temporarily restricted to Soldiers issued meal cards and other active-duty servicemembers until further notice. Workers are conducting emergency repairs on a main steam pipe that runs under the building.
Civilians and other categories of patrons are not permitted to dine in the facility until repairs have been completed.
The timeframe is unknown.

Nominations for Spouse of the Year
In 1984, President Reagan proclaimed the Friday before Mother’s Day of each year to be Military Spouse Appreciation Day.
Fort Belvoir celebrates this day with an event at the Fort Belvoir Community Center May 9 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Military servicemembers are encouraged to nominate their spouse for “Spouse of the Year” award. Winners and those nominated will be acknowledged at the May 9 event.
Nominations for Spouse of the Year should be double-spaced and less than 500 words. Nominations must be received at Army Community Service by April 24. More information is available by calling 703 805-2967/4409/4590.

Spouse career expo, job fair
USO of Metropolitan Washington and Joint Employment Transition Services present the Military Spouse Job Fair and Expo from 7 a.m.  to 3 p.m at April 26 at the Fort Belvoir Officers’ Club. Play in a band?
American Red Cross of the National Capital Area’s Youth Services hosts “Chord Red: Battling Malaria One Band at a Time.” The fundraising music competition is at Jammin’ Java May 3 at 1 p.m. Teens in bands interested in competing are asked to contact Gail Dickert, , 571 259-5800, by April 11.

Spring Safety Day
The Fort Belvoir Installation Safety Office hosts Spring Safety Day 2008 at Specker Field House and the Belvoir Chapel parking lot May 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event includes more than 20 vendors; safety demonstrations by state, local, and private organizations; an awards ceremony; a free lunch; and the opportunity to win some door prizes. Defense Acquisition University’s Annual Acquisition Community Symposium, is April 15 at the DAU Fort Belvoir Campus.
This year’s theme is “The Defense Life-Cycle Management Challenge:
Innovation in Acquiring, Sustaining, and Improving DoD Weapon Systems.”

Education
Registration open for Civilian Education System
Registration is open for the Civilian Education System Intermediate Course at Army Management Staff College. The application deadline is April 14 for the course, which is Aug. 11-29 at Fort Belvoir and Fort Leavenworth, Kan.
IC is designed for leaders with direct and indirect supervision. Students complete 13.5 hours of distributed Learning (dL) before attending a three-week resident phase at either of the forts.
In this course, students enhance their leadership abilities and develop skills to manage human and financial resources, displaying flexibility and resiliency with a focus on the mission. 
The course is open to civilian and military personnel serving in supervisory or managerial positions. Enrollment is also open to DoD personnel who meet the eligibility requirements. However, it is only centrally funded for permanent Army personnel.
Applicants also must have completed one of the following courses prior to attending IC: Foundation Course (if required), Basic Course, Civilian Leadership Education and Development, Officer Basic Course, Warrant Officer Advanced Course, Advanced NCO Course or additional advanced level courses.

Central Michigan University
Classes begin Saturday. Classes are available at six locations in the D.C metro area including on Fort Belvoir and online. Concentrations are available in human resources, leadership, public administration, acquisition, information resource management and general administration. CMU accepts applications year round. Classes meet on alternating weekends or weekday evenings. Students can begin at any time as new classes begin every six weeks. Graduate degrees can be completed in 18 months or less. Old Dominion University

Old Dominion University at Fort Belvoir offers a masters of science in education with initial teacher licensure. The Military Career Transition Program is designed for those who want to become professional educators in PK-12 schools. The MCTP is open to active-duty military, retired military and spouses, and civilians. ODU is affiliated with Troops to Teachers/Spouses to Teachers. Summer/Fall 2008 open registration begins April 19.
Classes are offered during the evening and weekends and are on Fort Belvoir, Fort Myer and Quantico. The university also has distance programs available in a broadcast format, through video streaming and online. Two examples are engineering technology and criminal justice. Webster University

Registration is open for Webster University’s Spring 2, 2008 term. The term runs through May 18. Webster at Belvoir offers master’s degrees in procurement and acquisitions management; and business and organizational security management.

Northern Virginia Community College
Now is the time to register for the second-8 week, spring semester at Northern Virginia Community College. Classes begin Monday. NOVA offers degree and certificate programs. The school is regionally accredited with its degree programs approved by the State Council of Higher Education. NOVA is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges and has guaranteed admission agreements with more than 40, four-year schools. To fit busy schedules, NOVA offers hybrid classes on post and online. The school has free tutoring and other resources to help students achieve their goals. BOWC April Luncheon
The Belvoir Officers’ Wives’ Club’s Spring luncheon is Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Officers’ Club. Sheila Casey is guest speaker. Attendance is by reservation only. Walk-ins will not be permitted. 

Ordnance Ladies spring brunch

The Ordnance Ladies Association invites all members and their guests to Spring Brunch April 20 at the Fort Belvoir Golf Club from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The brunch costs $20 per person. Reservations are available by calling 703 425-3637. Membership information is available by calling 703 339-4897.

DLA Toastmasters

MVGS meeting

On April 15, the Mount Vernon Genealogical Society meets in Room 112 of the Hollin Hall Senior Center in Alexandria. The meeting starts at 1 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The meeting features a presentation, “Using Passport Records,” presented by Sharon Hodges.
The Hollin Hall Senior Center is four miles south of Alexandria just off Fort Hunt Road at 1500 Shenandoah Road, Alexandria.
MVGS is a nonprofit organization with more than 260 members living in Alexandria, Fort Belvoir, the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, Montgomery and Prince Georges and several states.

MWR Comedy Night

The Community Club and Big Nose Entertainment present “Just Fridays” comedy night April 11. Karaoke is from 6 to 9 p.m., in the lounge, followed by the comedy show from 9 to 11 p.m. The after party goes until 1 a.m. with Mix Master Ice. Administrative Professionals Day

The Officers’ Club hosts a buffet brunch April 23 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for employees and the people who make their jobs easier, their administrative professional.

Mother’s Day Buffet

MWR celebrates Mother’s Day May 11 at the Officers’ Club. Seatings are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and reservations are required. Tickets go on sale to Fort Belvoir members April 14 and, for members of other clubs and non- members, April 21. The cost is $27.95 for club members, $29.95 for members of other clubs and non-members, $12.50 for children 7 to 12 years and free for children 6 and younger.
