Miscellaneous

EEO class applications due Friday
Anyone interested in attending the Department of the Army Certified Collateral Duty EEO Counselor’s class must complete an application and return it to the Fort Belvoir EEO office by Friday.
Fort Belvoir’s Garrison Equal Employment Opportunity Office conducts the class April 28 through May 2.

Chaplains, ACS hold reintegration workshops
A reintegration workshop, open to both soldiers and spouses, is Monday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Family Life Center, Bldg. 1186. The center is off of Gunston Rd., adjacent to the Lawn and Garden Center on South Post. Registration for the workshop is required. Additional workshops are scheduled for May 19 and June 16. Ordnance Ladies host brunch

Spouse of the Year nominations due
Nominations for Spouse of the Year must be received at Army Community Service by April 24. Nominations should be double-spaced and less than 500 words. Military servicemembers are encouraged to nominate their spouses. Winners and nominees will be acknowledged at Military Spouse Appreciation Day, May 9. Enlisted Spouses’ Club sponsors events
The Belvoir Enlisted Spouses’ Club hosts a Cookie Membership Social Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Washington Village Community Center.
Enlisted spouses of all services at Fort Belvoir and in the surrounding area are invited to attend and learn about the activities the club has planned for the community in the spring and summer. The event is also an opportunity to provide suggestions to the club. Current members will provide refreshments.
The ESC hosts a free game night for military families April 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Washington Village Community Center. The event includes games for every age. Light refreshments will be served.

USO presents Military Spouse Job Fair and Expo
USO of Metropolitan Washington and Joint Employment Transition Services present Military Spouse Job Fair and Expo April 26 at the Fort Belvoir Officers’ Club. The event has limited seating, so, early registration is recommended by calling 703 805-4277/4590 or e-mailing .

Family Advocacy offers Parent U
The Family Advocacy Program offers Parent University April 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This one-day conference is open to the entire community. Participants can choose from a variety of mini seminars throughout the day. Local experts will teach the classes, which are designed to help families be successful. DoD hosts free motorcycle safety event
The National Capital Region Joint Service Motorcycle Safety Event takes place May 2 and 3 at the Pentagon.
The free, two-day event is designed to promote motorcycle safety for riders and military commanders. It will feature a bike show, booths, panels of speakers, and a “rodeo,” in which participants can compete in applying skills needed in heavy traffic scenarios. Additionally, the Army National Guard Motorcycle built by Orange County Choppers will be on display May 2.
The event will culminate on May 3 with a group ride to a local destination.

Case lots sale scheduled
The Fort Belvoir Commissary holds a case lots sale May 2 through 4 in the parking lot.
The sale will take place 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Prepared foods, such as canned fruits and vegetables, boxed drinks, cereals, and snacks will be on sale in bulk. Cleaning items and cleaning products will also be available.

Spring Safety Day scheduled
The Fort Belvoir Installation Safety Office hosts Spring Safety Day 2008 on May 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Specker Field House and Belvoir Chapel parking lot. The event will have more than 20 vendors; safety demonstrations by state, local, and private organizations; an awards ceremony; a free lunch; and the opportunity to win door prizes. Military Spouse Appreciation Day
Fort Belvoir celebrates Military Spouse Appreciation Day at the Community Center May 9 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. For more information, call 703-805-2967 or 4590. In 1984, President Reagan proclaimed the Friday before Mother’s Day of each year as a day to honor military spouses.
Spouse support group meets
DeWitt Health Care Network has a spouses’ support group Thursdays at 4 p.m. in the second floor group room of Building 815. It is open to spouses and significant others who are dealing with a loved one who is deployed or has recently returned. Information is available by calling 805-0156.

Divorce recovery group available
Messiah United Methodist Church has a Divorce Recovery Workshops from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays to June 11. Babysitting is available at the church. Topics include denial, grief, anger, loneliness, guilt, rejection, forgiveness, letting go, self worth and hope. After a brief discussion, small groups with trained facilitators form.
The course is appropriate for any stage of divorce.

Army Birthday Ball set
The annual U.S. Army Birthday Ball is June 14 at the Walter E. Washington
Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place NW, Washington, D.C.
This year’s ball celebrates the Army’s 233rd year of service to the nation.
All active and retired members of the U.S. Army, National Guard, Reserve,
Department of the Army civilians, contractors, and their spouses or guests
are invited.
Tickets are $80. A limited number of discounted tickets are available to military E-6 and civilian GS-7 and below on a first-come, first-served basis.
Required attire for military is the Dress Blue or Mess Dress uniform or the Class A uniform with white shirt and bow tie. Civilians should wear formal evening apparel.

Childcare will not be provided.

Army Family Team Building classes available
AFTB Level III is Tuesday to Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the AFTB Classroom. Level III has been revamped and presents 10 courses, including: Building a Cohesive Team, Managing Group Conflict, Leader Assisted Problem Solving, Communication Skills for Leaders, Understanding Needs and more. Free childcare is provided at South Post Child Development Center’s Hourly Care, for children registered with CYS. Requests for child care must be received by Friday. Administrative professionals honored
The Officers’ Club celebrates Administrative Professionals Day Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event is a buffet brunch and costs $15 per person. This event is open to all. Reservations are required by calling 703-780-0930.

Don’t forget Mom
Mother’s Day Buffet is May 11 at the Officers’ Club. Seatings are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and reservations required. Tickets go on sale to club members Monday. Members of other clubs and non- members may purchase tickets beginning Tuesday. The cost is $27.95 for club members and $29.95 for members of other clubs and non-members, $12.50 for children age 7 to 12, and free for children 6 and younger.

Education
Scholarships available
The Belvoir Enlisted Spouses’ Club offers three scholarship opportunities for the 2008-2009 school year.
Two awards are available for high school seniors who are family members of active or retired enlisted servicemembers in the Fort Belvoir area.
Additionally, one award is available for a spouse of an active or retired servicemember. The deadline for receipt of completed applications has been extended from May 2 to May 9. Applications are available at Barden Education Center or by request at e-mail .
The Fairfax-Lee Chapter of AUSA offers awards through its 2008 Scholarship Program. Past recipients have received awards ranging from $500 to $2,000.
Completed applications are due by May 3.

On-post campuses open registration

Old Dominion University
Summer/Fall 2008 open registration begins Saturday for Old Dominion University.
Classes are offered in the evenings and weekends on Fort Belvoir, Fort Myer and Quantico. Additionally, the university offers distance programs available in a broadcast format, through video streaming and online. Northern Virginia Community College
Registration is accepted now for summer classes at NOVA. The summer semester begins May 19 and ends July 11. NOVA offers a variety of degree and certificate programs. The community college is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges program and has guaranteed admission agreements with more than 40, four-year schools. Webster University
Registration for Webster University’s Summer 2008 term is open. The term dates are May 31 to Aug. 1. Troops, Spouses to Teachers offered
Virginia Troops to Teachers offers interested Soldiers the opportunity to become teachers. The program provides a $5,000 stipend to pay for any approved teacher licensure program, in any state, at any accredited college to military personnel with bachelor’s degrees. Participants may also be eligible for a $10,000 bonus.
Additionally, the Spouses to Teachers program offers up to $600 to reimburse participants for required tests leading to a teaching license.

Second Night Seder offered
The Fort Belvoir Jewish Congregation hosts Second Night Seder at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Religious Education Center. Hazzan Rabinowitz will lead the Seder. RSVPs to Sara Astrow, 703 806 4196. The suggested donation for adults is $25; kids 5 to 12, $10; 4 and younger, as guests of the congregation. Monies collected will go to Yad Sarah charity and Jewish Council for the Aging. The Religious Education Center hosts its Program Day at 9:30 a.m. April 24.

Faithful men retreat
The Belvoir Men of Faith sponsor a retreat April 25 to 27 at Shrine Mont Retreat Center in Orkney Springs, Va. The event is a chance to relax, learn and hang out with other men who are daring to hear and answer God’s call in their life. Food and lodging provided. Suggested donation is $40. Reign Down USA coming
Reign Down USA is scheduled for April 26 at 6 p.m. on the National Mall. The free event is a time of worship, prayer and Scripture reading. It is a worship and prayer movement that hopes to reach out to all Christians throughout the country and bring them together in large venues/stadiums in every state. This movement begins with simultaneous worship, which will be led by a worship leader in Washington, D.C., and broadcast via satellite. The event then prays for the president, future presidents, the U.S. Congress and Senate and

Supreme Court judges.
Worship and prayer will then continue in every state’s venue and prayers will go up for each states’ respective governors, mayors, civil state employees, pastors/churches, teachers, corporate leaders and any person in a leadership role, eventually ending with individual prayer. Open Air Faith Festival presented
The Fort Belvoir Staff Chaplains Directorate hosts an Open Air Faith Festival & Concert May 24 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Parade Field 1, across from Abbot Hall on Belvoir Road.
The event is free and open to all military ID card holders. Non-military decal vehicles must enter off of Route 1 through Tulley Gate.
The event’s purpose is to honor God, country and Soldiers; unite communities of faith on Fort Belvoir, inform the greater Fort Belvoir community of the religious services available; and inspire people of all ages through continuous praise, worship music and prayers.
There will be a kid zone, plus food and craft vendors. People who attend are welcome to bring blankets and lawn chairs.
Musical artists include Antonia Lawrence, Bishop Bruce Parham, Fred McKinnon, Jason Crabb, Martha Munizzi, Mary Alessi, SONICFLOOd and local artists.
Planners also need volunteers to help with the event.
