Festival fun

Final days for resident survey
Tuesday is the deadline for Belvoir residents to participate in the annual Department of the Army Resident Survey, which was recently mailed to all residents of The Villages at Belvoir. Participation provides a more accurate picture of how well residents’ on-post housing needs are being met.
Information provided from the survey helps the Residential Communities Liaison Office and the private partner make decisions in providing the services and facilities important to families living on Fort
Belvoir.
Answers posted to the survey are strictly confidential. No personal data is tabulated and the survey will not identify the family or where they live.

Mmmm - steak
The Officers’ Club hosts Steak Night Tuesdays. All are welcome to enjoy the menu items, including New York strip, Delmonico, filet mignon and prime rib. There is also salmon for fish lovers. Dinners include a free glass of wine. Lobster tail can be added and steaks can be blackened.

Summer reading program, WiFi
Van Noy Library’s Summer Reading Program, Read, White and Blue, encourages children and teens to read for pleasure during summer vacation. The program runs through Sept. 5.
Preschoolers through 6th graders read 15 books. Children not yet able to read can have books read to them. Children can read any book and record it on reading logs, which are available in the library.
Students in grades 7 through 12 read eight books. Teens can read any book and record it on their log.
Completed reading logs can be turned in at the library any time before Sept. 5 for a prize and entrance into an end-of-summer prize drawing.
The library also now has WiFi.

SJA office relocated
The Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, (including its legal assistance, claims, military justice and other sections) is in its new location on 16th Street at 9910 Lowen Road, Bldg. 702, Fort Belvoir, VA 22079-5593. The phone numbers remain the same.

CYS in housing
Staff from Child and Youth Services bring arts and crafts activities to the housing community centers. The events are free and open to all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Palette of Fun, for third- and fourth-graders, George Washington Village, 10 to 11 a.m., today and July 2.
Entomology, for fifth- and sixth-graders, Fairfax Village, 1 to 2 p.m., today and July 2.

Boating safety
The Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 25-8 offers a boating safety class from 6 to 8 p.m. July 6 to 9, which meets the requirements established by Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. All regions fine boat operators who have no evidence of taking a boating safety class. Requirements differ by state.
The class meets at West Marine, 601 S. Patrick St., Alexandria, 22313. Students get a manual, a certificate, and class-completion card.
The cost is $40/student, $60 for a couple who shares the manual.

Deployment and family readiness
The Mobilization/Deployment and Family Readiness Program conducts the following monthly classes:
July 2, 10:30 a.m. to noon, Family Readiness Group Roundtable: for all FRG leaders, unit commanders, first sergeants and FRG volunteers. The topics in July are the American Red Cross, Outdoor Recreation and the Warrior Adventure Quest. FRGs should register by calling 805-5683 or 703-805-4590.
July 13, 10 a.m. to noon, Pre-Deployment Workshop: a discussion concerning preparing for deployment and learning about resources available for servicemembers, DoD civilians, and their family members, including before, during and after the deployment period. 
July 15, 9 a.m. to noon, FRG Essentials: Basic FRG information for FRG leaders, volunteers and members, as well as Family Readiness Support Assistants, commanders and first sergeants. 
July 20, 10 a.m. to noon, Reintegration Workshop: Preparing for the return of a loved one, or adjusting after the return, as a family; what to expect and resources to help, for Soldiers, DoD civilians, and family members.
Classes are in the ACS Classroom, Bldg. 200, Belvoir Road.

Newcomer’s Orientation
The next Newcomer’s Orientation is July 13 in the Barden Education Center Auditorium. People can learn about Fort Belvoir, what resources and events are available in the community and meet the installation command staff and key installation directorates.  Childcare is provided with advance registration.

Spouse orientation
All spouses new to Fort Belvoir and the surrounding areas are invited to attend the New Spouse Orientation, Spouse Meet & Greet, from 10 a.m. to noon July 15 in George Washington Village Community Center.
People who attend can get information about Belvoir, the National Capital Region, how to use the Metro, adult education, child care/school information and more. The meetings are ideal to meet other area spouses.

Naturalization, citizenship information
Fort Belvoir and Fort Myer Army Community Services host an information session about Naturalization and Citizenship July 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Belvoir’s ACS, 9800 Belvoir Road, Bldg. 200.
All military members and their families are welcome. This is an ideal great opportunity to ask questions about preparing to fill out immigration visas, citizenship exams and more. AFTB Level 1
Fort Belvoir Army Family Team Building offers a Saturday, Level 1, Navigating The Military Life AFTB class, July 18. The location for the free, one-day class is 9800 Belvoir Road, Bldg. 200. Free onsite childcare will be provided. Children must be registered with Child and Youth Services before the class. The deadline for childcare is July 6.

Found items
Over the past several months, the Directorate of Emergency Services, Law Enforcement Lost and Found Property Custodian have collected several unclaimed bicycles and other items. Items are held for 90 days before they are turned over to the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office.
People who have lost any items and want to find out if they have been recovered by DES Police may contact Tim Brown, lost and found property custodian, 703-806-0146. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays through Fridays and voice mail is available after normal duty hours. Some reasonable proof of ownership is required to claim any found property.

CESL deadline
Wednesday is the registration deadline for the Army Management Staff College’s upcoming Continuing Education for Senior Leaders class. The class is Aug. 3 to 7 at Fort Belvoir.
The course is a resident and distributed learning course that brings senior civilian leaders together to discuss current and relevant issues facing the Army. It is designed for the GS-14 and 15 leader level. A quarter of the seats are allocated for senior Army uniformed staff.
The CESL encompasses seminars and interactive discussions and presentations.

Summer Splash at the O Club
Everyone is welcome at the Summer Splash at the Officers’ Club pool Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The $10 admission includes a pool pass for the day, food, live band, children’s activities; moon bounce and dunk booth.

Orthodox Divine Liturgy
An Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy for the Feast of SS. Peter and Paul will be celebrated in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Woodlawn Chapel at 9 a.m. Monday. The two New Testament saints are claimed as the apostolic founders of both ancient Antioch and Rome.
The next Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgy will be celebrated in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Woodlawn Chapel at 9 a.m. July 15 on the occasion of the feast of St. Vladimir (Volodymyr) of Kyiv in what is now modern Ukraine. That saint is credited with the conversion of the people of Kyivan Rus’ in the late ninth century AD to Orthodox Christianity.
Jewish
Fort Belvoir Jewish Congregation’s Friday Night Service is Friday at 8 p.m. at Belvoir Chapel.
The congregation has a Saturday Service Saturday and celebrates Connor Chroman’s Bar Mitzvah.

The Fort Belvoir’s Garrison Chaplain Office is looking for a pianist for the 8 a.m. Protestant worship service.

• Awana?
Fort Belvoir’s Protestant Community is considering starting an Awana program Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m., for youth pre-kindergarten through 6th grade.
Planners need teachers and students to make it a reality. Pre-registration is ongoing through July 24 for teachers and students. If there is enough interest, planners expect to start the class Sept. 9, and expect it to run through May.

• Protestant Women
The Protestant Women of the Chapel starts new summer Bible Studies July 9. The group’s main meetings are Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Belvoir Chapel.
Free childcare is available for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old.
A homeschool room is available for school-aged children - parents are asked to bring work for their children.
The PWOC also has two weekly evening studies Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Religious Education Center and Wednesdays from 7 to 8:45 p.m. in the REC Library.  More information is available from Jennifer Nicholas, 703-781-0916.

Barden Education Center
NoVA
The second, six-week summer session classes at Northern Virginia Community College start Tuesday. The session runs through Aug. 10.
High school and home-schooled students who are at least 16 years old may be eligible to start earning college credits. Interested students should contact the Student Services Center at the nearest campus - Alexandria, Annandale, Loudoun, Manassas, Springfield and Woodbridge.

Park University
Park University summer internet classes are under way. Registration for Fall 1 begins July 5. Onsite classes begin Aug. 10, with a registration deadline of Aug. 7; and internet classes begin Aug. 17, with a registration deadline of Aug. 14.

Troops to Teachers briefing
A representative from Old Dominion University’s Military Career Transition Program presents a Troops to Teachers briefing at 11 a.m. July 7 in Room 122 of Barden. Troops to Teachers is ideal for servicemembers considering teaching as a second career.

ODU
Non-degree applications are being accepted now for summer and fall classes at Old Dominion University.
ODU offers a master of science in education for active and retired Soldiers, military spouses and qualified civilians; and teaching licenses in elementary, middle and high school academic areas of math, English, social studies, and science.
Courses are conducted at Barden and online.

UMUC
University of Maryland University College is registering for summer classes.
UMUC is in Barden Education Center, Rooms 126 and 128.

Central Michigan University
Registration for fall classes at Central Michigan University is open July 13 to 24, for classes that begin Aug. 21 at Barden. Classes are available at six locations in the D.C metro area including at Fort Belvoir.
CMU offers a master of science in administration degree. 
CMU accepts applications year round, with new classes beginning every six weeks. Classes meet on alternating weekends or weekday evenings. Degree completion is available in 18 months.

Webster University
Registration at Webster University is open for fall classes, which begin Aug. 15. The GRE/GMAT is not required for admissions.
Evening classes are conducted at Barden Education Center and additional programs are offered in the D.C. Metro area at Bolling and Andrews air force bases, and the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.
Webster University offers five, nine-week terms each year, with some transferable credits.
Office hours are Mondays to Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Fridays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
