Cheap Dates



Children’s chorus
The Alexandria Choral Society Children’s Chorus Presents: On Broadway!
Sunday at 4 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The church is at 2701 Cameron Mills Road, at the corner of Cameron Mills and Monticello, Alexandria, Va., 22302.

The concert is free.

Free Mother’s Day tours
Two Alexandria museums, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum offer free tours on Mother’s Day for all visiting mothers. Mom can get a tour of these Old Town Alexandria historic sites May 10 from noon to 5 p.m.
Mothers can tour both museums for free. Admission is $4 for all other adults and $2 for children, ages 11 to 17.
Gadsby’s Tavern Museum is at 134 North Royal St., and the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum is at 105-107 South Fairfax St.
From 1 to 5 p.m., Gadsby’s Tavern Museum will also have junior docents, volunteers from grades 2 through 5, stationed at each tour stop, to share their enthusiasm for history.

Climate-change lecture
U.S. Geological Survey has part of its public lecture series: Science in Action, Wednesday.
“Watching Nature’s Clock: A Citizen-Scientist Effort to Track Seasonal Signs of Climate Change,“ by Dr. Jake Weltzin starts at 7 p.m.
The USGS is recruiting volunteers to team up with scientists tracking the effects of climate on seasonal patterns of plant and animal behavior.
At the lecture, people can learn how they can contribute to this new national effort, by getting outside, and observing and recording flowering, fruiting and other seasonal events. Scientists and resource managers will use people’s observations to help track effects of climate change on the Earth’s systems.
The event, free and intended for a general audience, is in the Dallas Peck Auditorium at the USGS, 12201 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, Va., 20192.

Tuba, euphonium
The U.S. Air Force Band Chamber Players Series has Music for Tuba and Euphonium, featuring Master Sgt. Chris Quade and Tech. Sgt. John Cox. The event is at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Reston Community Center, 2310 Colts Neck Road, Reston.
The concert is free and tickets are not required.
