Great Dane event
The Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League hosts meet and greets in October.
MAGDRL helps find homes for abandoned or homeless Great Danes and, at any given time, has 70 to 90 of the breed throughout the Mid-Atlantic that need homes.
Saturday, Felix & Oscar, 6671-A Backlick Road, Springfield, from 11 a.m. to to p.m.

AcademyWomen
AcademyWomen supports all aspiring, current and veteran female military officers. The group hosts a Career Coaching Workshop and Annual Symposium Oct. 17 to 19 at the Women’s Memorial in Arlington. Men and women are welcome to attend.
The event is an opportunity to network with military women from every service and to be inspired by a variety of panels and keynote speeches on a variety of topics related to women in the military.

Author-educator Searetha Smith-Collins lectures at Alexandria Black History Museum, with a discussion of her book, “The Road to Wisdom, Plain and Simple.“
The event is Tuesday when the author discusses how parents can influence a child’s intelligence through common-sense approaches.
The free program begins at 7 p.m. and is open to all. Due to limited
seating, reservations are requested but not required to attend.
The museum is at 902 Wythe St., Alexandria.
Apothecary Museum
Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum celebrates National Pharmacy Month
With a free open house during Arts Safari on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. The museum will also offer hands-on crafts for children that day, as part of the Torpedo
Factory Art Center’s annual Arts Safari.
The museum will have free tours and a coloring activity book created for families.
Visitors can learn about the special properties of herbs and botanicals, like lavender and dragon’s blood, while discovering the important role the apothecary played in early Alexandria.
The museum is at 105-107 South Fairfax St., Alexandria. Hours through October are Sundays and Mondays, 1 to 5 p.m., and Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fine Arts Fest
The Third Annual Old Town Manassas Fine Arts Festival is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Harris Pavilion, 9201 Center St.
The festival includes demonstrations in various art media; an exhibit and sale by local artists and photographers; musical performances, a children’s art area; door prizes and more.
The Manassas Art Guild sponsors the free event that is open to the general
public.
