Cheap dates for Oct. 22
Dance company, Army band
Crosscurrents Dance Company of Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Army Band, Downrange, perform Saturday at The Quad at The Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton. The event is free. The dance company is scheduled from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by an ‘unplugged’ performance from Downrange, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Bluegrass
Dead Men’s Hollow returns to the Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton, Saturday from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at W-16, second floor.
Admission for members is $8, for non-members, $10.
The group’s music includes old-time, bluegrass, Americana and country blues. The Washington Area Music Association named it the Bluegrass Group of the Year.

Poetic art
The Workhouse Arts Center, 9601 Ox Road, Lorton, hosts a benefit opening reception for the Yellow Ribbon Fund, Poetic Art, from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at W-16, second floor.
The reception features some of the submitted poems.
The Yellow Ribbon Fund is a nonprofit created in 2005 to help wounded Soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan, and their families, while they recuperate at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Md.
The exhibition, which is open to the public until Nov. 20, features professional and amateur poets and artists whereas the work of art inspired the poet’s words, or the poem inspired the artist’s creation.
The exhibition features invited and juried artists and poets, including Rita Dove, poet laureate of the U.S. and consultant to the Library of Congress from 1993 to 1995; Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia from 2004 to 2006, and 1987 Pulitzer Prize winner in Poetry.

Beauty and the Beast Jr.
Young People’s Theater presents Beauty and the Beast Jr. at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 and 20 and at 3 p.m. Nov. 14 and 21 at New Hope Church in Lorton.

18th century dance classes
Learn the dances of Jane Austen, George Washington and Abigail Adams in Gadsby’s Tavern Museum’s historic ballroom. Dance master Corky Palmer lead this educational series of 18th-century English country dance classes, in preparation for the Late Harvest Ball, which is Nov. 21.
Dance classes are in the museum, 134 North Royal St., Old Town Alexandria, Nov. 5, 12 and 19, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Singles or couples are welcome at this beginner-level series.
Lessons cost $30 for the series or $12 per class. Classes can be purchased online at the Gadsby’s shop at gadsbystavern.org or by calling 703-838-4242.
Annual walk for farm animals
Annual Event Sponsored by Farm Sanctuary Aims to Put Farm Animal Issues on the Map
Farm Sanctuary, a farm-animal protection organization, sponsors the 2009 Walk for Farm Animals.
The Washington D.C. Walk for Farm Animals is Saturday at Dupont Circle. Participants should meet at the Red Metro Line. Registration is at 11 a.m., and the walk begins at noon.

Air Force bands brass, jazz
The U.S. Air Force Band Chamber Players Series has Music for Brass Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. at Reston Community Center, 2310 Colts Neck Road, Reston, Va.
The Airmen of Note, with guest artist, five-time Grammy-winning baritone saxophonist, Gary Smulyan, perform in its Jazz Heritage Series, at 8 p.m. Nov. 6. The event is in Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st St NW, Washington, D.C., and the nearest Metro station is Foggy Bottom/GMU on the Blue and Orange Lines.
