Core drilling to begin around post

By Paul Bello

Heavy rains delayed core drilling projects around Fort Belvoir last month, but that will change starting this weekend, installation officials announced this week.
For the next two Saturdays in October, pavement projects along Pohick, Gunston, and Belvoir Roads and 9th Street will commence as part of Belvoir’s overall infrastructure improvement plan.

As a result, one lane of the roadway will be temporarily closed to allow a reasonable flow of traffic in both directions, said Christopher Larson, a representative for the project.

Other measures warning drivers of the work include road signs, traffic cones before and around the work area and two flagmen to direct traffic. Larson said each hole should take about 30 to 45 minutes to complete.

According to Randy Godfrey, a project manager at Belvoir, the work will help develop design documents for eventually widening the roads. Based on current Base Realignment and Closure plans, both Belvoir and Gunston Roads will be converted to four lanes by 2011.

Godfrey said phase one of the road widening project will be awarded next spring and that it includes Pohick and Gunston. Phase two consists of 9th Street and Goethals Road. Larson said work is being done on Saturdays from this point forward because of high traffic volume during the week.

Date: Oct. 4
Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
