Education briefs



PIE reception
The Partners in Education Reception is Sept. 29 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in South Post’s Packard Conference Center. Groups or organizations interested in learning more about having a partnership with local schools are asked to RSVP to or call 703-805-9119. 

Back-to-school nights
Walt Whitman Middle School’s Back-to-school night is tonight at 7 p.m.
Mount Vernon High School’s Back-to-school is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Mount Vernon High Senior Parent Information Night is Oct. 2 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

SKIES Unlimited programs
SKIES Unlimited has Kindermusik Adventures. Interested people are asked to call for information on curriculum, dates and times.
SKIES Unlimited instructors needed
The Child & Youth Services family needs child/youth instructors. The new Schools of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration, & Skills are looking for qualified and caring instructors for its schools of arts, sports, academics and life skills.
Classes serve pre-school through high school seniors, in a variety of subjects and interests.

ODU
Old Dominion University has a Military Career Transition Program, which is a Master of Science in Education with initial licensure program. Active/retired military, military spouses and qualified civilians are eligible for the program.
Candidates must have completed a bachelor’s program. The teaching license is good in 44 states and DoD schools around the world.
ODU has live classes at Barden Education Center in the evenings and some Saturdays; weekend teletechnet satellite courses at Quantico Marine Corps Base and online courses. Teaching licenses can be earned in elementary, middle school and high school academic areas. Students who are transferred before completing of their degree/licensure can complete their program via video streaming or online.
ODU is affiliated with the Troops to Teachers and Spouses to Teachers national programs. Personnel can begin the masters program immediately as non degree students and be accepted into the program during the first semester.

U of Maryland University College
Registration is open for The University of Maryland University College’s fall semester, with regular evening classes starting Oct. 23.
UMUC also has three upper level 1 credit Saturday classes, when students attend two Saturdays, with class start dates of Oct. 4 and 18 and Nov. 1.
Online sessions start Sunday and Oct 5.
UMUC is in Barden Education Center, Bldg. 1017, Room 128. Office hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Fridays 9 a.m. to noon.

UMUC has a new class, Introduction to Homeland Security. 

NOVA
Northern Virginia Community College offers degree and certificate programs and is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges program. NOVA has guaranteed admission agreements with more than 40, four-year schools. NOVA offers hybrid classes on post and online, free tutoring and on-post placement testing.

Park University
At Park University, students study at campus centers located nationwide and online from throughout the world. Registration is open for online and onsite classes in undergraduate and associate of science degrees in eight-week internet or nine-week, face-to-face classes. Graduate certificate programs are also available.

George Mason University
GMU is introducing a Masters Level Graduate Certificate in Emergency Management and Homeland Security to be offered on post.  Join us at our Open House information session on 31 July at the Barden Education Center from 0900 to 1600.  The objective of this certificate is to provide US Army and homeland security professionals with the in-depth knowledge required to conduct critical duties supporting local, state and federal level missions.  Classes will be taught in a weekend format at the Barden Education Center.  Come to the Open House to find out more, or see George Mason’s representative on Tuesdays.
