Safety tips
The Directorate of Emergency Services offers the following child seat safety tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
• Children up to a year old and weighing at least 20 pounds should be restrained in a rear-facing child safety seat. Such devices should not be used in the front seat when an air bag is present.
• Children one to four years old and weighing 20-40 pounds should be restrained in a forward-facing child safety seat. The child safety seat should be properly installed in the rear seat of the vehicle.
• Children ages four to eight and less than 57 inches tall should be seated in a booster seat. The booster seat should be properly installed using lap and shoulder belts in the rear seat of the vehicle.
• Always refer to the child seat instructions to make sure the seat you have purchased is appropriate for your child.
• Always refer to the child seat and vehicle manufacturer’s instructions for proper use and installation.
To have a vehicle safety expert check the installation of your child safety seat, visit the Fort Belvoir Military Police Station or the Fort Belvoir Fire Department.
