Fort Belvoir’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation hosts the 5th annual Turkey Trot 5K and 10K runs Nov. 16, starting at 9 a.m. at 14th Street and Middleton Road on South Post.
The event is open to all active-duty military personnel and Family members, Department of Defense civilians and retirees. Race categories include overall male and female 5K, overall male and female 10K, and overall male and female adaptive/hand-recumbent cycle.
Nearly 500 Fort Belvoir runners participated in last year’s event, competing for special holiday prizes, including grand-prize Thanksgiving turkeys awarded to the top finishers in each overall division and pies awarded to the 1st-place winners in each age category: 15 and younger, 16-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 and older.
According to Sheila Edwards, Fort Belvoir sports director, the Turkey Trot is one of several walks and runs staged at various times each year to provide servicemembers, Families and civilians of all ages an opportunity to challenge themselves on courses running through portions of the installation.
Jogging strollers will be permitted on the race course, but for safety reasons, all strollers must start in back of the wave. Participants will not have to pay for babies utilizing baby strollers but those children will not be eligible for prizes or awards. Bathrooms will be available at the start location (14th Street and Middleton Road), and medical personnel and water stops will be available throughout the event. No pets will be allowed on the race course.
