China and the US relations ruffled over islands of South China Sea

China expressed its displeasure over patrolling of warships of the United States near two islands in South China sea. Zhubi reef facing claims are part of Spartley island group. They are called as Nansha islands In China. China has used the terms “strong discontent” and “resolute opposition” to condemn the actions of the US. The islands are believed to be rich in natural resources and this suggests the claims by China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

About half of the world’s merchant ships pass through this area and this makes it even more attractive for both the world powers to exercise control.

China’s foreign ministry said “the actions of the U.S. warship have threatened China’s sovereignty and security interests, jeopardized the safety of personnel and facilities on the reefs, and damaged regional peace and stability, “The American ambassador was summoned by the Chinese Foreign ministry and told not to interfere in sovereign matters of China. Washington has replied that it doesn’t need to consult any nation to exercise its right of navigation. This reaction of the US was condoned by the Chinese embassy in Washington as an excuse by the United States to flex its muscles in the name of navigational freedom.
