Stay positive to keep your heart healthy says a new study
According to a new study conducted on 1000 patients with coronary heart disease over a period of five years, it was noticed that patients who were engaged in positive activities and maintained happy state of mind are physically active, sleep better and take their heart medications and were also less likely to smoke in comparison to the patients who were in a less positive state of mind.
“Negative emotions and depression are known to have harmful effects on health, but it is less clear how positive emotions might be health-protective, We found that positive emotions are associated with a range of long-term health habits, which are important for reducing the risk of future heart problems and death” said Nancy Sin, postdoctoral fellow at Pennsylvania State University in the US.
The researchers have analyzed the psychological state at the baseline and after a period of five years by asking them to rate how well they felt ten different positive emotions which included “proud”, “interested”, “enthusiastic” , “proud”. Physical activity, sleep quality, medication adherence and alcohol and cigarette use were also assessed during the research. It was found that positive state of mind was not affected by alcohol consumption habits.
Though positive state of mind has no direct effects on the health of subjects as observed in the study, it had direct relation to physical activity, healthy sleep and adherence to strict medical regime, etc.
